Frank Packer Plate Field

The Frank Packer Plate field is often made up of three year olds that didn’t run in the Australian Derby or the Australian Oaks. Often, the Frank Packer Plate field will include a well-known runner or two, but usually is made up of horses that aren’t having particularly strong careers. Relegated to Group 3 status in 1991, the Frank Packer Plate field continues to attract reasonably competitive horses with its $150,000 prize money. Named after Sir Douglas Frank Hewson Packer, the Frank Packer Plate was first run in 1980 as a Group 2 race.
