2012 Frank Packer Plate Results – Fat Al Wins Over Ambidexter

April 28th, 2012

Sydney Cup Day took place at Royal Randwick on Saturday April 28 and the second race on a bumper eight event program, the Frank Packer Plate 2012, was won by Gai Waterhouse’s very promising three-year-old Fat Al.

Taking their record to five wins from seven starts Al Maher gelding Fat Al won the $125,000 Group 3 Frank Packer Plate (2000m) as he pleased, progressing well through the ranks and booking a trip to Queensland for the 2012 Brisbane Winter Racing Carnival.

It was the bookmaker.com.au favourite to salute for the punters as well, Fat Al paying around $2.05 for the win.

Leading jockey Nash Rawiller was so impressed by the horse’s effort on Sydney Cup Day that he declared him “too good for Brisbane” and suggested the riches of the Sydney and Melbourne Spring Racing Carnivals would be more suited.

In an impressive lead-all-the-way victory Rawiller set a slow pace with Fat Al throughout who loped along at his own speed to lead from the Peter Snowden-trained Ambidexter while a number of roughies settled in good positions.

With 1000-metres to go it was obvious that Fat Al and Ambidexter would take out the Frank Packer Plate Quinella.

Over the last few hundred metres the duo sprinted away but it was Fat Al on the inside after a beautiful ride that had the acceleration to get away and win.

Ambidexter was challenging but was trapped three wide early and there was no speed on, the Frank Packer Plate winning too good and too fast.

On the line the favourite had a length to spare over Ambidexter while third place went to a very brave Rekindled Alliance who defied the maths to cross a further three quarters of a length away when really they should have had no chance.

A bargain buy at the 2010 Australian Easter Yearling Sales for just $27,000, Fat Al has won his last three on the trot and his last two at Group level having also won the Group 3 Carbine Club Stakes (1600m).

“Wonderful progression,” Waterhouse declared.

“The way he stepped up in distance and class and took control of the race.

“I love the way he sprinted and he still had plenty in the tank.”

As for Queensland?

“He’s already bought his air ticket on his frequent flyer points,” Waterhouse said.
