2011 Frank Packer Plate Form Guide

April 21st, 2011

The 2011 Frank Packer Plate may not be the highest rated event on Sydney Cup Day at Randwick but there’s every chance it could turn out to be one of the most exciting.

There are 12 acceptors for the event and more than a couple of them have shown a fair bit of promise leading into the race and certainly deserve a look.

Check out our 2011 Frank Packer Plate form guide and pay special attention to a few runners in particular.

First off the bat Fast Clip looks the winner and he’ll field plenty of bets come race day.

His 2011 campaign has been nothing short of excellent and another victory here in our opinion makes him Waterhouse’s best Autumn discovery.

He has another runner which may disagree though and that’s Needs Further, unbeaten from three this year and if he can record a metro stakes victory over 200m the spring carnival will be at his feet.

Away from Waterhouse there’s a couple of others worth mentioning as well including Anthony Cummings Shadows In The Sun and Paul Beshara’s Happy Trails.

They’ve both been place horses for much of their careers but over two kilometres at Randwick they have the opportunity to become much much more.

2011 Frank Packer Plate Form Guide

#1 – Fast Clip (Barrier – 3 ) (56.5kgs)

  • Trainer: Gai Waterhouse
  • Jockey: Nash Rawiller
  • Career Stats: 10s – 5w – 3p
  • Last Start: 1st at Rosehill

One of the most in form horses from the entire Waterhouse stable and no reason he won’t win here. Amazing to think you could get $8 for him last start, big favourite in this race.

#2 – Praecido (Barrier – 4) (56.5kgs)

  • Trainer: David Payne
  • Jockey: Corey Brown
  • Career Stats: 18s – 1w – 4p
  • Last Start: 4th at Randwick

Can’t believe this horse still only has one victory alongside its name. Fourth in the Australian Derby and in good touch, Praecido backers dare to dream this may be your day.

#3 – Needs Further (Barrier – 8 ) (56.5kgs)

  • Trainer: Gai Waterhouse
  • Jockey: Tim Clark
  • Career Stats: 4s – 3w – 1p
  • Last Start: 1st at Randwick

Three in a row and she keeps handling the distance, perhaps there’s something in a name after all. First go at 2000m but he’ll run it, won’t surprise if he’s first across it either.

#4 – Shadows In The Sun (Barrier – 12) (56.5kgs)

  • Trainer: Anthony Cummings
  • Jockey: Craig Williams
  • Career Stats: 16s – 2w – 3p
  • Last Start: 3rd at Randwick

Third behind Needs Further last start but has run the distance twice. Recent form not amazing but steadily improving, value place hope.

#5 – Happy Trails (Barrier – 6) (56.5kgs)

  • Trainer: Paul Beshara
  • Jockey: Damien Oliver
  • Career Stats: 10s – 1w – 5p
  • Last Start: 4th at Randwick

Hasn’t been disgraced at all in his recent runs but still not quite at that winning level. Steps up to the 2000m and the distance is a query, but it’s an honest horse which could run another place.

#6 – Shootoff (Barrier – 2) (56.5kgs)

  • Trainer: Graeme Rogerson
  • Jockey: Michael Rodd
  • Career Stats: 13s – 1w – 2p
  • Last Start: 3rd at Rosehill

Destroyed in the Rosehill Guineas but a big improver into third spot last start. Run the trip four times now but would probably prefer a little bit of give in the surface.

#7 – Hard Liquor (Barrier – 5) (56.5kgs)

  • Trainer: Anthony Cummings
  • Jockey: Kathy O’Hara
  • Career Stats: 7s – 1w – 0p
  • Last Start: 1st at Canterbury

Has been racing on provincial tracks and improved rapidly in 2011. Finally broke through for a maiden last start but is stepping up in both class and in distance this weekend.

#8 – Muirfield (Barrier – 1) (56.5kgs)

  • Trainer: Michael Moroney
  • Jockey: Kerrin McEvoy
  • Career Stats: 7s – 1w – 0p
  • Last Start: 9th at Rosehill

Couldn’t get near them last start and there’s nothing to indicate he’ll be any closer in the Frank Packer Plate.

#9 – Quarterbar (Barrier – 9) (56.5kgs)

  • Trainer: Michael Moroney
  • Jockey: Glyn Schofield
  • Career Stats: 8s – 1w – 1p
  • Last Start: 9th at Randwick

Needs a dry track and even then the best he could hope for is a third. More than five lengths away last start and will probably be the same again.

#10 – Allez Tara (Barrier –10) (56.5kgs)

  • Trainer: Kevin Moses
  • Jockey: Brenton Avdulla
  • Career Stats: 2s – 1w – 0p
  • Last Start: 8th at Canterbury

Lesser known trainer has jumped at the chance to get his runner into a metro stakes race which is good to see, unfortunately we won’t be seeing him first past the post.

#11 – Honour Net (Barrier – 11) (54.5kgs)

  • Trainer: John O’Shea
  • Jockey: Christian Reith
  • Career Stats: 5s – 0w – 3p
  • Last Start: 4th at Randwick

Far from the worst horse in the field it’s placed behind Brazilian Pulse and Fibrillation. Struggled a little last start but if she’s still fresh she’s still a chance.

#12 – Song Shan (Barrier – 7) (54.5kgs)

  • Trainer: Anthony Cummings
  • Jockey: Glen Boss
  • Career Stats: 8s – 0w – 1p
  • Last Start: 6th at Randwick

Cummings keeps slipping this filly into quality fields so he definitely see’s something in her. We’re yet to be convinced though and if she gets her first win we certainly won’t be on her.
